Prior Scientific Hardware Autofocus
PureFocus 850 Laser Autofocus System
Rapid, real-time hardware autofocus for compatible industrial, materials-science and life-science microscopy systems.
Price on quotation
PureFocus 850 must be configured for the microscope, optical system, objectives, sample interface, focus actuator, operating mode and software requirements. Auckland Scientific will review the complete application and provide a system-specific quotation.
Product overview
Prior Scientific PureFocus 850 combines advanced optics and intelligent processing to provide rapid, real-time focus maintenance for compatible infinity-corrected microscope systems.
The system detects a reflective reference interface within the sample arrangement and continuously maintains the required distance between that reference and the imaging focal plane. This helps compensate for focus drift caused by temperature changes, mechanical movement, sample variation or long-duration image acquisition.
A motorised offset lens allows the imaging depth to be adjusted relative to the detected interface. This enables the system to maintain a defined imaging plane or acquire images at different focus offsets while continuing to reference the same surface.
PureFocus 850 is installed within the infinity space of a compatible optical system. It can be integrated with selected commercial microscopes, Prior OpenStand systems, Queensgate piezo devices and supported third-party focus actuators.
Real-time autofocus
Rapidly detects and maintains focus during automated imaging and long-duration acquisitions.
Long recapture range
Provides a long objective-dependent capture range for recovering focus after larger movements.
Dynamic laser adjustment
Dynamic power adjustment supports reliable detection across different samples and reflective interfaces.
Multi-objective operation
Stores and recalls objective-specific parameters for systems using multiple objectives.

How PureFocus works
- The 850 nm laser is directed through the microscope’s infinity optical path towards the sample.
- PureFocus detects a suitable reflective interface, such as a slide surface, coverslip, glass-bottom dish or reflective material surface.
- The system calculates the focus correction needed to maintain the selected imaging plane.
- A compatible motorised focus actuator responds to the correction signal and adjusts the microscope focus.
- Focus is continuously monitored and corrected during imaging.
Available PureFocus 850 configurations
PureFocus 850 is available with different surface-tracking modes and controller arrangements. These options are selected during system configuration and are not Shopify variants.
| Part number | Tracking mode | Included controller | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| PF850 | Slice mode | PF100 human-interface controller | Focus detection from approximately the centre of the field of view |
| PF850M | Line mode | PF100 human-interface controller | Focus determined from an averaged signal across part of the field of view |
| PF850OEM | Slice mode | PF301 compact OEM controller | OEM or software-controlled instrument integration |
| PF850MOEM | Line mode | PF301 compact OEM controller | OEM line-mode autofocus integration |
Slice mode
Determines the focus position from a point around the centre of the field of view. It may be suitable where a defined central reference area is required.
Line mode
Determines focus from an averaged detected signal across a proportion of the field of view. It may provide more representative surface tracking for certain samples.
Controller options
| Controller | Interface | Focus control | Application |
|---|---|---|---|
| PF100 | Human-interface controller with adjustment control and USB-B | One stepper or piezo Z-axis port | Operator-accessible standalone and integrated systems |
| PF301 | Compact black-box OEM controller with USB-B | One stepper or piezo Z-axis port | Software-controlled and OEM integration |
A separate focus actuator is required
PureFocus detects and calculates the required focus correction, but a compatible motorised microscope focus drive, piezo focus device or other supported actuator is required to physically move the focal plane. The focus actuator is not included unless specifically stated in the quotation.
