SCHOTT VisiLED S40-10D Darkfield LED Illumination System – MC 1100
SCHOTT VisiLED S40-10D Darkfield LED Illumination System – MC 1100
High-intensity, segmentable incident darkfield illumination for stereo microscopy, surface inspection and defect detection.
True Incident Darkfield Illumination
The SCHOTT VisiLED S40-10D is a dedicated LED darkfield ring light designed to illuminate the specimen from a very shallow angle.
Smooth surfaces remain comparatively dark while scratches, particles, edges and fine surface defects scatter light towards the microscope objective and become highly visible.
This complete configuration combines the S40-10D with the MC 1100 controller, power supply and UK mains lead to provide an immediately usable VisiLED darkfield system.
Key Features
Low-angle incident light highlights surface defects and particles.
Powerful illumination for demanding surface-inspection applications.
Select illumination directions electronically through the controller.
Designed for integration around compatible stereo microscope objectives.
Optimised for true incident darkfield close to the specimen.
Maintenance-free LED illumination with actively controlled temperature.

What Does Darkfield Reveal?
Conventional brightfield illumination directs significant light vertically towards the specimen. Darkfield instead directs the illumination across the surface at a shallow angle.
Flat, smooth regions reflect comparatively little light into the microscope objective. Surface irregularities scatter the low-angle illumination upwards and therefore appear bright against a darker background.
This makes darkfield particularly effective for inspecting polished, machined, reflective or otherwise low-contrast surfaces.
Fine scratches scatter light strongly and become much easier to identify.
Dust and debris can appear bright against an otherwise dark specimen.
Small raised edges and surface discontinuities are accentuated.
Particularly useful for shiny metal, semiconductor and precision-manufactured surfaces.
Segmentable Darkfield Illumination
The S40-10D is segmentable, allowing different parts of the ring to be activated rather than always illuminating from the full circumference.
Changing the illumination direction can reveal surface structures that may be difficult to see under symmetrical lighting and can help determine the orientation of scratches, ridges or defects.
Available Configurations
MC 1100 Darkfield System
Includes S40-10D ring light, MC 1100 controller, power supply and UK power cord.
MC 1100 System + Darkfield Bracket
Adds the SCHOTT 400.512 darkfield bracket with 2 × M6 threads.
Useful where the ring light needs to be supported by a separate articulated arm, stand or mounting arrangement.
MC 1100 System + Darkfield Objective Adapter
Adds SCHOTT P/N 400.510 for mounting the S40-10D to compatible Ø66 mm or Ø70 mm microscope arrangements.
This adapter also forms the basis for configurations using SCHOTT working-distance extension tubes.
Longer Working Distances
The S40-10D is optimised for a short working distance of approximately 5–15 mm. Where the microscope configuration requires additional clearance, SCHOTT provides an adapter system to extend the usable working distance. :contentReference[oaicite:2]{index=2}
Extension for approximately 30–50 mm working distance
Extension for approximately 50–80 mm working distance
Extension for approximately 80–110 mm working distance
Combine Brightfield & Darkfield
The S40-10D can also be combined with compatible VisiLED brightfield illumination using SCHOTT's 400.500 brightfield/darkfield adapter kit.
This allows brightfield and darkfield illumination to be installed on the same microscope so the operator can switch between different contrast techniques.
SCHOTT documents the adapter kit particularly for combining the S40-10D with the S80-55 brightfield ring light. :contentReference[oaicite:3]{index=3}
SCHOTT VisiLED Modular System
The S40-10D forms part of the wider SCHOTT VisiLED modular illumination platform. The diagram below shows the MC 1100 controller, darkfield and brightfield ring lights, mounting adapters, extension tubes and transmitted-light options.

Auckland Scientific – Darkfield Illumination Support
Darkfield performance is highly dependent on microscope working distance, objective diameter and specimen geometry.
Tell us your microscope model, working distance and what you are inspecting and we can help select the correct S40-10D mounting arrangement and any required adapters.
Each complete system includes the S40-10D ring light, MC 1100 controller, controller power supply and UK power cord. Mounting brackets, objective adapters, brightfield/darkfield adapter kits and working-distance extension tubes are supplied separately unless specifically included in the selected configuration.
