Motorised Focus Mechanisms for Leica Microscopes
Precision motorised Z-axis control for compatible manual Leica microscopes, supporting automated focusing, Z-stacking, extended-focus imaging and repeatable microscopy workflows.
Configured and supplied by quotation
The correct focus mechanism depends on the exact Leica microscope model, existing focus controls, preferred coupling method and controller configuration. Auckland Scientific will confirm compatibility and prepare a system-specific quotation.
Product overview
Prior Scientific motorised focus mechanisms provide precise electronic control of the microscope’s fine-focus movement. On compatible manual Leica microscopes, the standard PS3H122R mechanism clamps to the focus assembly and controls the fine-focus adjustment while retaining access to manual coarse focusing.
Installation of the standard bolt-on mechanism does not normally require the microscope body to be inverted or dismantled. Certain Leica microscopes instead use a dedicated focus mechanism or may support a direct-coupled arrangement.
When combined with a compatible Prior controller, motorised focus control can support automated Z-stacking, autofocus routines, extended-depth-of-focus imaging, slide scanning and other repeatable microscopy applications.
Precision Z control
A minimum specified step size of 0.002 µm helps retain the fine-focus resolution of the microscope mechanism.
Simple integration
Bolt-on configurations can be installed without dismantling the microscope body.
Anti-twist cable
The no-twist cable arrangement helps prevent the focus-drive cable from rotating with the mechanism.
Automation ready
Compatible configurations can be controlled through Prior ProScan III or OptiScan III controllers.
Leica microscope compatibility
The following combinations are based on Prior Scientific’s published compatibility information. Compatibility must be reconfirmed against the full microscope model and configuration before ordering.
| Leica microscope | Focus mechanism | Required adapter | Configuration |
|---|---|---|---|
| DMR and DMIR | PS3H122R | H968 | Bolt-on focus drive |
| DM2000 and DM2500 | PS3H122R | H2754 | Bolt-on focus drive |
| DM4000, DM5000 and DM6000 | PS3H122R | H2581 | Bolt-on focus drive |
| DM4000, DM5000 and DM6000 | PS3H122DM4 | Dedicated configuration | Direct-coupled focus mechanism |
| DMLS | PS3H122LS | Dedicated configuration | Model-specific focus mechanism |
Direct coupling and alternative configurations
The H122KLC fine-focus coupling is listed by Prior for selected Leica DMLM, DM2000 and DM2500 configurations. Its suitability depends on the microscope’s existing focus arrangement and must be confirmed before ordering.
Direct coupling can provide a more rigid connection to the fine-focus mechanism and may improve repeatability, but it is not available or required for every Leica microscope.
PS3H122R specifications
| Focus movement | Fine-focus control |
|---|---|
| Minimum specified step size | 0.002 µm |
| Travel range | Determined by the microscope focus mechanism; specified by Prior as unlimited |
| Maximum load | 15 kg |
| Cable length | 2 m |
| Controller compatibility | Prior ProScan III and OptiScan III controllers |
Specifications shown principally relate to the standard PS3H122R mechanism. Dedicated Leica focus mechanisms may have different specifications. Final performance also depends on the microscope’s mechanical focus system and complete automation configuration.
Software and automation integration
The focus mechanism is operated through a compatible Prior controller. Prior lists the PS3H122R motorised focus drive as compatible with third-party microscopy platforms including:
- µManager
- Inscoper
- VisiView
Software support depends on the selected controller, communications interface, software version and appropriate device configuration. Compatibility with a particular Leica software package should not be assumed unless it has been confirmed for the proposed system.
Python and custom software
Custom control from Python is possible through the Prior controller rather than by connecting software directly to the focus motor. Prior’s SDK 2.0 is based on a C/C++ DLL and includes Python examples, allowing developers to incorporate supported Prior hardware into custom automation workflows.
Python integration should therefore be described as SDK-based development support, not as a standalone ready-to-use Python application. The operating system, controller model, interface and required functionality should be reviewed before specifying a custom solution.
Typical applications
- Automated Z-stacking
- Extended-depth-of-focus imaging
- Automated slide scanning
- Repeatable focus positioning
- Time-lapse microscopy
- Autofocus and image-analysis workflows
- Custom OEM and laboratory automation
What may be required
A complete motorised-focus system may include:
- The appropriate Prior motorised focus mechanism
- A Leica microscope-specific mounting adapter
- An optional direct fine-focus coupling, where supported
- A Prior ProScan III or OptiScan III controller
- A joystick or other manual control device, if required
- Computer connection and suitable imaging or automation software
- Additional motorised XY stages, filter wheels or automation components
Please note: controllers, microscope adapters, direct couplings, joysticks and other accessories are not necessarily included with the focus mechanism and will be specified separately in the quotation.

Request a quotation
To help us specify the correct configuration, please provide:
- Your Leica microscope model
- A photograph of the microscope and focus controls
- The microscope serial number or approximate age, if available
- Your existing motorised stage or Prior controller, if applicable
- The imaging software you intend to use
- Whether you require installation, training or custom integration
Auckland Scientific will review the information and provide a quotation for the appropriate focus mechanism, mounting components, controller and support services.
Product names and microscope model references are used to identify compatibility. Prior Scientific specifications and compatibility information may change. Final suitability and the complete bill of materials will be confirmed at quotation stage.
