Automated wafer handling for microscope inspection

Keep wafer inspection moving with automated cassette-to-microscope transfer, an intermediate preparation station and a dual-arm robot.

The C&D V1020 Microscope Wafer Loader automates the loading and unloading of wafers between a cassette and a microscope inspection stage. While an operator examines one wafer, the intermediate station prepares the next, helping reduce pauses between inspections.

Designed for 50 mm to 200 mm wafers, the V1020 brings wafer transfer, orientation, macro inspection and microscope inspection into one coordinated workflow. Each system is specified to the application, microscope and required options.

A high-value, project-configured system. Contact Michael to discuss your wafer format, microscope, required options and site requirements before requesting a quotation.

A faster, more continuous inspection workflow

The intermediate station is designed to centre and orient the wafer and perform macro and bright-light inspection. While the current wafer is on the microscope stage, the next wafer can be prepared. At the end of inspection, the dual-arm robot exchanges the wafers between the station and microscope stage.

This coordinated transfer is designed to reduce the waiting time associated with manual cassette handling, while the operator remains in control of microscope inspection and stage navigation.

Key features

  • Wafer range: 50 mm to 200 mm
  • High-throughput handling: greater than 200 wafers per hour; achieved throughput depends on the wafer, recipe and inspection process
  • Dual-arm robot: supports rapid wafer exchange between the preparation station and microscope stage
  • Intermediate station: wafer centring, orientation flat/notch alignment, macro inspection and bright-light inspection
  • Wafer management: cassette mapping and automatic detection for up to two wafer sizes
  • Operator controls: touchscreen PC-based interface, engineer-developed recipes and a programmable five-button speedhandle
  • Recipe settings: wafer selection, inspection and return angles, flat/notch alignment, rotation speed and wafer direction
  • Single-cassette operation: one cassette for loading and unloading; SMIF loading is optional

Options to discuss

Depending on the required configuration, manufacturer-listed options include top- and bottom-side OCR, motorised stage, multiple wafer sizes without hardware change, KLARF, macro inspection lighting and SECS/GEM. Confirm the exact option set and interface requirements for your project.

V1020 technical specifications

Model C&D Semiconductor V1020 Microscope Wafer Loader
Wafer size 50 mm to 200 mm
Throughput Greater than 200 wafers per hour stated in datasheet; application-dependent
Compatability Compatible with most Microscope manufacturers
Interface Touchscreen PC-based software user interface
Footprint in datasheet 38 in × 30 in; confirm full installed dimensions for the selected configuration
Site utilities Confirm vacuum and other facility requirements with the manufacturer for the proposed configuration

Applications and compatibility

The V1020 is intended for semiconductor and materials inspection workflows where wafers are loaded from a cassette, inspected at a microscope and returned automatically. The manufacturer describes compatibility with most microscopes; suitability depends on the microscope model, stage interface, wafer specification, cassette format, available floor space and facility utilities.

To assess a configuration, share your microscope make and model, wafer diameters and thicknesses, cassette type, inspection steps, required options and site location. Auckland Scientific can coordinate the technical discussion with C&D Semiconductor and clarify the proposed scope before a quotation is prepared.

Ideally, a wafer sample for trial would be preffered for feasability.

Why discuss your V1020 project with Auckland Scientific?

  • Microscopy experience: speak directly with Michael Hallewell, Director and Microscopy Specialist, with more than 21 years of microscopy experience.
  • Application-led specification: discuss the microscope, wafer format and inspection workflow before settling on a configuration.
  • Clear project scope: confirm options, compatibility, delivery, installation and support arrangements as part of the quotation.
